see, two things are at play here: people who don’t read the actual criticism/questioning within your message (for whatever reason—let’s not even speculate) and people who just want to jump to the op’s defense.

firstly, you never attacked the op. you raised valid points, and you didn’t do so in an inflammatory fashion. you questioned the validity of singling out stiles—arguably the most popular character? i don’t even want to depress myself with fandom stats—when the spirit of the other ‘character weeks’ had been specifically to bring less-appreciated characters into the spotlight.

second, you know me; i’m a huge sterek fan. and yet i keep my ass out of the sterek tag precisely because so much fandom wank originates /there/. i love sterek done right, but i hate how as a whole it’s a fetishized excuse to watch two (canonically) straight white dudes get it on and often involves gratuitously ignoring any and all poc and female characters to get there. like the sheer amount of sterek fic i have to close out of because of stupid things like oh, idk, having everyone in derek’s pack /except boyd/ every fucking time?

and that’s not even mentioning how stiles is painted as a saint and a sweetheart etc etc.

tl;dr. i’m not even going to question whether or not you could or should have worded things differently, because you shouldn’t have to. if people were mature, instead of ranting at you and spewing hate they would engage you in conversation: why do you feel this way? are your statements valid? /is their own perception of shit perhaps problematic gee is there room for growth?/ but no, people like to jump down anyone else’s throat without bothering to understand what the actual point being made might be.

yes, i would like stiles to be examined as yknow a teenager who has teenager problems (on top of supernatural ones) and friends and family and is cold and manipulative and unrepentant as opposed to someone whose main purpose is to “save” derek.

as though trauma is something you get over by being in love with your “perfect” other half. as though you can only do it when you have someone to lean on— someone to depend on. spoiler: it isn’t.

dyou see the difference now? the emphasis isn’t on STEREK. its how people constantly PORTRAY it. and how in their portrayal they make compromises on really awesome characters and in turn romanticize unhealthy behavior.

There was! There’s also Meritable Mccall that’s happening but that’s exactly the problem isn’t it? That the main character needs a week to be appreciated because he’s always erased and/or demonized by the fandom in favor of other characters that are more questionable in their ethics and the ever famous shipping problem.

Its not a cry of ‘—but these characters don’t get a week, how come stiles gets one’ it’s more like i am wary of how this stiles week will turn out given the fandom’s propensity to put him on a pedestal and turn him into a mere half of their ideal and healthy “queer representation” ship. HOPEFULLY THO we can get some awesome meta and graphics going.

“So,” asks Angela, their court-mandated couple’s counselor. “How did the two of you meet?”

Angela is young but she’s smart. The framed PhD hanging on the wall behind her says so. She’s maybe a few years older than Allison, she’s definitely older than Scott, and Chris can’t look her in the eye.

She reads the discomfort in Chris’ gaze. Watches as he strokes his upper lip in thought. He wants to answer, she can tell, but he can’t seem to find the words necessary. She turns to Scott instead.

“Mr. McCall?”

He’s nineteen and just as obviously uncomfortable as his husband. He avoids her gaze as well, crosses his arms and stares at his lap like a particularly petulant preschooler.

She wants to laugh at them, these two grown men acting like guilty children caught binging on candy before dinner, but professionalism and her fledgling career beg her not to.

She waits a beat and then a minute longer before coughing gently. “Gentlemen, I’d like to remind you that at the end of each session I have to type up a report to give to your case manager.”

Chris winces but stops staring at the wall.

“The less you talk in these sessions, the more likely it is that each report will do nothing but exacerbate your current … situation.”

Scott huffs unhappily but stops staring at his lap.

Angela leans back in her chair to wait. Clasps her hands together on her stockinged knee. Tries her best to radiate something other than smug cheerfulness. She asks them again to tell her how they met.

This time Chris looks her right in the eye, his chin held high, daring her to judge him. “Scott was my daughter’s first boyfriend.”

Well.

That’s definitely not the beginning she was expecting.
